Dear Friends
Greetings from Maharashtrians in London!
The Members, Trustees and the Executive Committee of the London Maharashtra Mandal have great pleasure in sending good wishes and felicitations to all your members.
Maharashtra Mandal, London was established in 1932 when Sahitya Samrat Shree N.C.Kelkar was in London for the Round Table Conference. It has been working ever since then except for a short hibernation period during the 2nd World War when most social organisations in the U.K. had done the same and many members of the Mandal were actively involved in the war effort.
The Mandal restarted in the Fifties when Shree Balasaheb Kher was appointed High Commissioner for India in London. Mandal has flourished ever since.
Although the Mandal started in London, it had membership covering all of the United Kingdom, as the total Maharashtrian population at the time was really small and was concentrated in London. Today we have many Mandals all over the U.K. who have very cordial relations with the London Mandal. Our membership is all embracing and members come from all over the U.K. for special programmes.

And now we have reached the landmark year in our history – 75th birthday- Amrut Mahotsav
Wherever in the world we are, we take pride in being Maharashtrians. We come together to celebrate special occasions, stage plays, invite prominent artists from Maharashtra and recreate a mini Maharashtra wherever we are. That is our common bond even though we are many thousands of miles from each other.
London has a special place in our history and relationship. The capital of the Empire that ruled over India and hence viewed with loathing as well as fascination. Maharashtrians have come here for a long time.
In this Amrut Mahostavi year we would like to hold a Maha Maharashtrian Mela in London. We have chosen a grand and stunning venue for it. Victoria Hall in North London. Maharashtra Mandal London would like to invite all the Mandals round the world to join in the celebration to make this a truly Jagatik Maharashtrian celebration
The Mela will be held over three days: 25th August and 1st/2nd Sept 2007. This is a time when the tourist rush is over yet the weather is still good. Mela will consist of a fund raising dinner on 25th August and on 1st and 2nd Sept - social and cultural programme.
The major event will be a charity/fund raising dinner on Friday evening which we hope will be attended by dignitaries from India as well as from the British Royal family and the Government.
For visiting delegates from overseas hotel accommodation, optional sight seeing tours of Britain and /or of European cities etc is being planned.
The essential part of the Mela is to celebrate this unique occasion with the participation of Maharashtra Mandals everywhere.
Please forward this open invitation to your other Maharashtrian contacts that are spread worldwide. We look forward to welcoming a large contingent to make this a bhooto na bhavishyati celebrations!
