Keeping the tradition of providing variety of programs, MML provides another genre of celluloid, short films. We have brought various short films from talented young Marathi directors like Umesh Kulkarni, Pankaj Purandare, and Dhiraj Meshram. After the show there will be discussion about the films with Umesh Kulkarni. Here is the synopsis of few short films which will be screening on the day.
"Girni" tells a story of Samir, a 10 year old, who lives in a chawl in a metropolis in India, with his widowed mother and grandfather. Only easily available alternative to earn living arises with a grinding machine. The machine brings with it its horrible, incessant and oppressive sound.The machine takes away the boy’s space, his relationship with his mother, his playtime ....his childhood. Samir’s innocent mind is alert to this oppression and rebels against it. Girni: the never-ending and loud grind of life! Girni received Best Fiction Film Award in Fresh Film Fest, Carlovy Vary, Czech Republic, 2005, Third Best Film in Next Reel International Film Festival, New York, for 2005 and GRAND JURY PRIZE in IFFLA, USA 2006. It also received PRESIDENT GOLD MEDAL in Non-feature Film and Direction category and won National award for Best Cinematography.
"Dwija" is based on child widows in Maharashtra who had to shave their heads and lead completely distraught lives while "Oadh" revolves around a boy named Nandu who spends the entire day flying kites and forgets to complete his homework. To save himself he accuses his teacher of beating children. The twist in the tale comes when his father gives him a letter of complaint addressed to the headmaster. Now, Nandu has to defend his lie. He manages to justify the letter, but only too late.
