Queen
honours DTI man with long-service medal
DTI News December 2001 - Department of Trade & Industry
FINANCE
OFFICER, Shankar Nairi, has been awarded the Imperial Service Medal by
the Queen for his work in the public service.
Mr Nairi, who retired in May, first joined the Department as a Clerical
Officer in the Insolvency Service back in 1975.
He has spent his entire career in the DTI transferring in 1987 to the
export trade sections, initially at Dean Bradley House and later at Bridge
Place. Then in 1996 he moved to Kingsgate House where he became Assistant
Finance Officer to the Business Group and Central Services Group in British
Trade International.
Last
month he returned to the Department to receive his award from the Permanent
Secretary, Robin Young, who made the presentation on behalf of Her Majesty
the Queen at a short formal ceremony held in 1 Victoria Street with Shankar's
family, friends and former colleagues.
Presenting the medal, the Permanent Secretary said: "This award is
made with the approval of Her Majesty and is accorded only to those who
have served the Crown for no less than 25-years service. I heartily congratulate
him on his achievement and thank him for his commitment to duty over many
years.
Shankar was commended for high standards of thoroughness and accuracy
in his accounts work. It was estimated that during his last five years
he signed claims totalling £100 million pounds. During the same
time, he only lost one half-day's work due to sick leave. His renowned
attention to detail was a particular asset in his day-to-day duties and
he developed a formidable reputation for his handling of grants for outward
missions and exhibitions. |
