An
Interim Report - The first 120 days
At the AGM held on 25th
March 2001 Shobha Banarse was invited to stand unopposed as President of the
MML. This popular choice proved to be a wise one. The EC chosen was a combination
of enthusiastic experienced veterans and keen youthful newcomers. By leading
from the front and paying attention to details a hitherto unknown esprit de
corps was created within the EC and resulted in a series of socially and commercially
successful programmes.
A brief summary of these
programmes is as follows:
1) 6th May, Anand Bazaar. Record number
of stalls and attendance. Featured for the first time children's entertainment.
2) 10th June, Tribute to P. L. Deshpande. So many members had their individual
homages to the brilliant writer that the programme over ran by several hours.
3) 16th June , Dance recital by Miss Aditi Bhagwat.
A full house for this talented and charming dancer who expertly enchanted the
audience with this particular aspect of Maharastrian Indian Culture.
4) 1st July, Ashadhi Ekadashi. A full house attended this programme of
devotional songs sponsored kindly by Mr&Mrs Madhu Nerkar.
5) 14th July, Vocal recital by Mrs Shuchita Atlekar. This classically
trained artist was throuroughly appreciated by the capacity audience.
6) 22nd July, Two coach trips to Althorpe. The first coach trip in over a decade was 'coach full'. To the ancestral
home and final resting place of Princess Diana. There followed an impromtu concert
by some of the talented members of the party.
Incidentally similar outings are under consideration to such diverse places
as Leicester Space Center, Brands Hatch Racing Circuit, enclosed Tropical Forest
in Devon. Any further suggestions for coach trips would be welcomed.
We look forward to the forthcoming events such as Ganesh Festival, Diwali, Home
grown talent evening, Dramas, Xmas etc and the all-important Golden Jubilee
in Summer 2002.
'Prez' (Abbreviaiton of
President a title bestowed upon the legendary Kansas City saxophonist Lester
Young by the famed jazz singer Billie Holiday reciprocating his nicknaming her
'Lady Day') will continue to press ahead enthusiastically supported by the Vice
President and EC.
I now know what Denis Thatcher
was thinking about while sipping his G&T at the 19th hole! My thoughts are similar
whilst enjoying a quiet whiskey and soda.
As the say watch this space. -
